About this brand
Discover the history
Mercedes-Benz traces its roots back to the invention of the automobile by Karl Benz in 1886, when he developed the first gasoline-powered vehicle, the Benz Patent Motorwagen. Around the same time, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach also created their own gasoline-powered car, leading to the formation of the two brands that would eventually merge to form Mercedes-Benz. Karl Benz founded Benz & Cie., and Daimler co-founded Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG), both playing critical roles in the early automotive industry.
The name “Mercedes” originated from Emil Jellinek, a businessman who was an early customer and racing enthusiast. He named the cars after his daughter Mercedes, which led to the “Mercedes” brand being born in the early 1900s. By 1926, the two companies of Benz and Daimler officially merged, forming Daimler-Benz AG and establishing the iconic three-pointed star logo that represents the brand’s dominance in land, air, and sea mobility.
Over the years, Mercedes-Benz became synonymous with luxury, innovation, and quality. The brand played a significant role in developing automotive technology, including creating the world’s first fully independent suspension system and pioneering advancements in safety such as crumple zones and airbags. It also expanded its product range, catering to luxury car enthusiasts, everyday drivers, and even developing commercial vehicles.

In motorsport, Mercedes-Benz has a long and prestigious history. Early in the 1900s, the brand made its mark in Grand Prix racing, and by the 1930s, its “Silver Arrows” were dominant on European circuits. In Formula One, Mercedes’ impact is legendary, with success dating back to the 1950s, including championships won by Juan Manuel Fangio. The modern Mercedes-AMG Petronas team has established a dynasty in F1, winning multiple Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships with drivers like Lewis Hamilton.
Aside from Formula One, Mercedes-Benz has also participated in various motorsport disciplines, including sports car racing, where it has claimed victories in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as touring car championships like the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). Mercedes even triumphed in rallying, with the brand winning the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally in the 1980s.
Mercedes-Benz’s success on the track has cemented its reputation as a manufacturer that blends luxury with performance. In recent years, the brand has focused heavily on electric and sustainable technologies, launching its EQ line of electric vehicles to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly transportation. Throughout its history, Mercedes-Benz has continually reinvented itself, adapting to changing technologies and market demands while maintaining its position as one of the most respected and innovative automotive brands in the world.
