By the time the 1987 World Sportscar Championship grid formed, the Group C category had escalated into a terrifying, high-stakes arms race governed by fuel efficiency and composite materials. The factory Porsche 962C, an evolution of the immortal 956, had ruled the globe for a half-decade. However, the teutonic giant was finally beginning to show its age. The 962’s traditional folded aluminum sheet monocoque was flexing under the immense aerodynamic loads of modern racing, leaving the factory cars vulnerable to the revolutionary, carbon-fiber-tubbed Jaguar XJR-8s campaigned by Tom Walkinshaw Racing. While Zuffenhausen remained stubbornly committed to its original chassis architecture, the British privateer outfit Richard Lloyd Racing (RLR) simply refused to accept this structural handicap. Armed with immense ambition and a deep understanding of the 962’s unrealized potential, Richard Lloyd commissioned the brilliant designer Nigel Stroud to effectively reinvent the Porsche prototype. The result was the 1987 Porsche 962C GTi 2.8, an uncompromising, bespoke masterpiece that blurred the line between customer car and independent constructor, explicitly built to beat both the Jaguars and the factory Rothmans Porsches at their own game.
Nigel Stroud discarded the factory’s folded sheet aluminum tub entirely. In its place, he designed a vastly superior monocoque constructed from aluminum honeycomb and carbon-composite bulkheads. This bespoke tub was significantly lighter, drastically safer, and most importantly, immensely stiffer than the standard factory chassis, allowing the suspension to work with surgical precision rather than fighting the flex of the car itself. Aerodynamically, the GTi was a radical departure from the traditional Zuffenhausen teardrop. Stroud reshaped the nose to improve front-end downforce and relocated the radiators to optimize airflow. However, the most distinctive visual signature of the GTi was its rear wing. Instead of mounting the wing to the extended bodywork like the factory cars, Stroud suspended it on a massive central pylon mounted directly to the gearbox, ensuring that the immense aerodynamic downforce was transferred straight into the chassis and rear tires. Beneath this sculpted, low-drag bodywork lay the formidable 2.8-liter, fully water-cooled twin-turbo flat-six engine.
